My current WIPS
Alright, as promised, here are my current WIPS. I'll try to group them up since I'm working on a few different projects at once.
These are the ornaments:
This is the 18" santa:
Here is the Judith Klawitter head I did last night, and 2 santa heads I started today at the baseball game. They are not complete and are at different stages of development. I'm still pushing clay around on them:
The 32" santa head close up:
And the bodies:
Anyway, I hope I didn't over load the servers with these. Sorry about the lighting, I had to take them inside and I don't have the best lighting available in my 100 year old house.
Hope you guys like them!
Hugs,
Lori

Re: My current WIPS
Dang Lori, you have been working your butt off.
Did you make a mold for the ornimants? Those look great and I bet you sell all of them at the show.
I have been told that you need some low dollar items to sell in case the bigger items aren't moving.
The santa heads are looking good, can't wait to see the finished products.

Re: My current WIPS
Thanks Darel,
Yes, I have been pretty busy so far this month. I think all of those things were done this month in fact. Most of it at baseball games. lol
Yeah, for the ornaments, I did start with a mold I took from a santa face. The mold isn't that great but it was enough to give a slight impression of the fascial features mostly for placement. So, once I make my "imprint" I then proceed to resculpt the faces. Some have bigger/smaller noses, some have bigger/smaller cheeks, eyes are all different, even the size of them are all different, right down to the wrinkles. So, they do take a while for me to do. Generally I'll get 8-10 impressions done at a time. Then take them with me while at baseball games and push the clay around one at a time. They are alright, and will be good items to fill the booth up with. I have already gotten 9 orders....and that was just from people looking at the unfinished item! I've been selling them pretty easy at $15 each. So, I guess people feel that is a fair price. I could probably make more off them, but, the economy is bad...and I want to sell them, not keep them. lol
Thanks for the compliment! The large head is following the Judith Klawitter tutorial. I'm now at the stage where I need to build the neck and shoulder plate. But, I need to build some type of stand to put the head on in order to do the rest. I'll probably get back to finishing that part later this week. So, I'm at a stand still atm.
Thanks for looking,
Lori

Re: My current WIPS
OH MY GOSH LORI !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
When do you take a breath???? And then there's the hair and the extras and the...the...the. My hat is off to you, SantaMaker, dear. You've certainly earned the title!
When I scrolled down and saw your big santa head I thought that you had taken lessons from Judith K. I can usually recognize her influence!! How big is he going to be? Do you have the plans for what he'll be like, yet, or are you still in the planning stages?
Get your weeks worth of sleep (ha ha ) and I'll look forward to more pictures! Thanks for posting!
Big hugs...Diane

Re: My current WIPS
Well, judging by the head size, I'm guessing him to be about 32" when finished. He is the santa I am working on following the Judith Klawitter video. I'm personally not comfortable with the big gaping mouth idea. I guess it is not my preference, but, since I was working alongside the video, thought I'd just follow along with her. Later, I'll do one with my own version and see how it goes then. As far as posing, I have not gotten that far really. I normally work for the moment. I haven't decided how he'll be dressed just yet but I'm aching to do a victorian santa. This one though, his face is to wide and round so does not speak victorian to me...instead, more like traditional santa. That is probably how he will end up, traditional.
Yes, I have too many irons in the fire and I need to finish up all of these....one at a time and get them done. No wonder I'm suffering from insomnia lately.
hugs,
Lori

Update 8/8/2009
Well, I think I'm sick of looking at santa ornaments. I finally have them all painted and I'm about 1/3 of the way putting hair on their heads. I haven't even began to put hair on the colored santas yet. At any rate, here are a couple pics to update on the progress. Of course, I still need to trim up their beards and eyebrows. And, too, they need their hats. Next pic update on these, they will have their hats on...so it might be a while in coming. lol
Wish I knew what people will like more, the curly hair or the straight hair. OH well....
Sorry about the lighting. My house will be 100 years old next year....I have really poor lighting no matter what I do.
Hugs,
Lori

Re: My current WIPS
Gosh, Lori, they're wonderful!! Who's mopping you up off the floor? :drinkcoffee:No one ever knows what goes into all of that if they don't do it themselves, do they?
I've got a question. Both style beards are popular, but did you ever try curling the ends of one of the straight beards with a curling iron? I'd love to see how that would look with one of yours. I was looking up different Santa beard styles recently and the smooth-end-curled-under look was one of the most common...popular????....whatever. Just a thought. Heck, they'll all sell no matter which way you do it. What do you charge for ornaments like that????
Now, do you still have to make hats for your little cadet-review you've got going there?
...................... (What is this, 20 questions???? )
I've had a difficult last 36 hours and I think I'm just prattlin'. Better quit before I trip over my tongue or something. Anyway, thanks for posting the pictures! The Santas really are great. (Have you named them yet????)
Better go! Hugssss.....Diane

Re: My current WIPS
LOL Diane, you are just great. Thank you so much for your compliment. I admit, the coffee seems to be running low as the energy these last few days. There are just not enough hours of the day sometime. I'll be soooo glad once I finish up this group. Next grouping will be only 8-10 at a time. Will be much easier to handle and not so over whelming.
Funny you ask, I have named them...I call them...santa oranments! how original, heh? lol I haven't tried curling up the straight bearding yet. I have thought about doing something, but I couldn't think of what. I thought they looked so plain..and rather, kind of like wizards. Just my luck. Perhaps I should invest in a curling iron. I'm charging $15.00 each for them. So far, I have 9 orders. Seems like it's not worth it for the amount of time I've put into them so far. And, yeah, I still need to make the hats. I still wonder what I was thinking of when I started on this little adventure. Too many things going on at once. Between having to take the kid school clothes shopping, and of course, a trip or two to the beach as well. He just had to get that last few trips in before school starts. Plus, he is going to Maine for a 5 days to visit his real dad this upcoming Friday; so a lot of preparations for that too. No wonder I feel like
Again, thank you for a nice compliment. I was beginning to think they looked a little funny. lol
Hugs,
Lori
ps. you can always ask me 100 questions, and I'll never mind, nor complain. Big hugs to you, Diane.

Re: My current WIPS
Ok, Lori....I'm daring to write one more time before I quit. (It's not even midnight yet! So early????)
You're welcome and they'll all be great! You know, you could start an Adopt a Santa thing were each one has a half-birth certificate and name with it. Macumadad Santa....Zurubable Santa....NotLob Santa....the list is endless! Just ask me. My husband is infamous (and I don't say that lightly) for the names he calls people. I haven't heard my real name more than 5 times in 33 years of marriage. (I do not lie!!!! ) My official title is "Mother Bear Fiercest Creation in the Universe When Someone's Attacking Her Babies". I'm serious. That's MBear (ie MB) for short. When Greg was flying his nickname was Dumpster, but we won't go into that! (It was hilarious, though!! They even put it on his wings' name tag on his flight suit! )
Anyway, I'm feeling like I did when I did that flying bears Santa. PUNCHY!!! You wouldn't believe what happened last night and why I'm suffering (you're suffering-ha) from my lack of sleep. I finished up here in the workshop about 3 last night and got ready for bed. Greg was already asleep and I didn't want to wake him so I tried to use the mouth wash v e r y q u i e t l y. I only succeeded in inhaling the stuff. And it was ORGANIC!! Well, my choking, gagging, and struggling-desperatly-to-breathe noises brought Greg running. That stuff numbs your windpipe!! Finally stopped coughing 'round about 4:30. Spent today having to redo everything I thought I accomplished last night and here, at almost midnight, I'm pretty much back to where I started. Ah, but it's a LEARNING PROCESS! REPEAT AFTER ME.......!!!!! L E A R N I N G P R O C E S S !!!!! One of my lines around here is, "I can't believe I did that!!"
So you see, dear heart, what you said about yourself ( ) seems to come with the creative-type people that we are. NO SWEAT! I CAN DOOOOOOOOOOO THAT!!! We gotta think before we say that. Use your blain use your BLAIN!
Ah, I turned into pumpkin 10 minutes ago. Better split early (ha-ha) tonight.
Keep those Santas coming, Sweetie! I'll be watching!

Re: My current WIPS
LoL Diane, you are such a hoot! I just love ya. I have enough trouble getting their hair on their heads...I can only imagine trying to come up with names for them and birth certificates. I'll have to go the George Foreman route....Santa, santa, and that one over there...that is santa too! But, speaking of names, I do the same thing to my hubby. That poor guy, I think he thinks his real name is Fred. Leon by birth, Fred by marriage. If I call him Leon....there must be something wrong. I've called him Fred for so long, that people we know have started calling him Fred. They thought that was his real name! LOLOLOL It's so bad now, that we can be in a store and I can say, "hey Leon look" and he never answers...then, as soon as I say, "hey Fred" he turns and says "what?" LOL no kidding. Oh well...love those terms of endearment, heh, MB? rofl rofl As long as they call ya, then things are good. It's when they don't you have to worry.
One must be careful of organic mouthwash....I hear that stuff packs a punch! Glad you are okay though. I would imagine that would cause a problem. Course your hubby is probably thinking it should have numbed your tongue...I know mine would probably wish for that on occassion! LOL But, he has no luck at all, and my tongue still wags.... Thank goodness for my blain though. If I could just think before I speak sometimes...
Anyway, I have to take the kid for one last trip to the beach for the summer before school starts. I've got a super late start. But, he and his girlfriend will get over it....and be lucky they get to go.
Be back later,
Hugs,
Lori

Lori, I posted a link where you can purchase a fairly cheap photo lightbox General Discussion.LMPartdolls wrote:

I love all the different personalities your ornaments have!
Re: My current WIPS
Thank you very much! Yep, I seen your link and am tempted to dig deeper into my pocket and buy one. Normally, I take all my pictures outside in the daylight on my covered porch. Generally that works well enough. But, since I was in a hurry to put some pics up, I didn't bother with carrying all of that stuff outside.
But, thank you for thinking of me.
Hugs,
Lori

Hi Lori,
I just loved your story about calling your husband "Fred". How did that ever happen? I seriously did bust out laughing. Thanks....I needed that!
Sorry I didn't get to chat with you Sunday night. Everybody was busy. I tried, but finally had to leave, too. Maybe another time?
(Incidentally, can I ask where you get your wool? I've been buying around and not really satisfied yet. )
Hugs...Diane

YEAH....my diet is working...I'm small enough to fit in a purse...WoooHooooo!!!!!!
Diane...that is so sweet of you and your sisters to go to help your WISE aunt and be with her. (notice I didn't say elderly...hehe) That's something that I always tell folks about my old folkes series that I do....it's not wrinkles and gray hair I see but Wisdom, knowledge and patience. AND the closer I get to being one of those Old FOlkes the more I believe that !!!!!
Lori has my muses just a singing to me today....thanks alot Lori...LOL....in seeing all her Santa ornaments. My mom use to give everyone an ornament at Thanksgiving...well I think that I'm going to pick up that tradition and start making all the kids in the family an ornament...give it to them at Thanksgiving like she did...then when they get grown they will have enough to take with them and decorate their trees at Christmas time. Hopefully, it will always remind them of mom and me. It's amazing how many ideas get bounced off of each of us in here...without the others even knowing it at the time. Thank you Lori!!!!!!
Hugs to all...and to all a good afternoon

Re: My current WIPS
Hiya Diane!
To answer your question:
In the beginning, there was this little screen saver that I found through shareware (or something like that) waaaaaay back when my hubby and I first started dating. I believe it was called "Fred". Good 'ole Fred used to walk around the perimeter of my monitor and from time to time he would do something random. For example, he might stop and pop open a beer and chug it down, then let out a huge BUUUURRRRP! Then, he might find a toilet and sit and read the paper....and do well...he would hum a merry little tune while he read the paper. Then, he would go off and run into the wall and fall down once he hit the other side of the monitor. He was quite busy this Fred, but he was every bit a guy...doing disgusting guy things. Well now, there came a time in the dating game once the "dating" wore off and we were more "comfortable" around each others company that my darling boyfriend started to exhibit little disgusting habits like passing gas, burping and well, just all sorts of nasty things. As a result, like most girls, I would squeal and tell him how disgusting he was! Then, one day, it dawned on me that my darling boy friend was just like ....you guessed it....FRED the screen saver! Any whoooooo, that is how he became known as Fred.
Don't worry about missing chat....I didn't get home from the beach until late, and never made it myself. I was too busy burning my skin and floating in the Atlantic ocean looking like a "manatee" as my darling son called me. As far as the wool for my hair is concerned. I'm kind of in the same boat as you. All of mine I have bought from different people on etsy. I just put in a search to find it...I think something like curly white mohair, and curly hair, etc. I haven't really found any that I'm satisfied with either as of yet. The mohair roving I have bought is usually pretty good. I haven't had any problems there as of yet. But, if you try to buy long locks etc, like I am using at the moment, and I think that is where you run into trouble. Everyone that I have bought from says their wool is "clean" beautiful locks etc. Albeit, it's nice and soft....but, I have had to weed out the mats and sift through a LOT of VM. Not very clean in my opinion. I have ended up throughing more out than I have used of the wool, plus it is taking me 3 times as long to clear through the yuck stuff to get through to the good stuff. I'm hoping that I will find the right supplier eventually that will have some good stuff all the time. lol But, that will probably not happen. Now, if you use tibetan lambs wool, I have never had any problems with buying that...and have bought it off of ebay from different people. Never any problems with that. An IPhone for your birthday! That is something to about. My son just got one a few weeks ago...and he loves it. They can definately do everything and then some. I'm with Regi, I'm glad my diet *cough cough* is working and I can fit in your purse. Have a safe trip to N.Y. Your aunt will be extremely happy to see you and your sisters!
Regi, I'm glad I could help bring back a nice memory with my "township" of santas. lol I think they are about to drive me to drinking a bottle of merry ho ho ho! that or I'm gonna pull my hair out instead . I think a glass of wine works nicely while putting hair on their heads. Of course, I can't help if the mustache ends up on the end of their noses mind you. Perhaps those are Russian santas..I don't know. rofl rofl You better get busy making your ornaments, it will be Thanksgiving soon!
Hugs,
Lori
He was quite busy this Fred, but he was every bit a guy...doing disgusting guy things. update 8/12/09
Alright, here is another update. This time it is the winking santa! Don't you just love progress. It took me a while to think about a story that I wanted him to tell, but I think I have finally decided on a pose for him. As a result, it might take me longer to get him completely finished...but if it goes as planned, it might be worth it in the long run.
Enjoy! Sorry he is naked...but you know how it goes sometime. lol

Re: My current WIPS
That is the plan, my dear friend, that is the plan! If I can't keep myself motivated, I will just make the rest of you motivated for me. lol
And, thanks very much. I try to do a little every day when I come home from work. And, work on my days off. It will be easier once my boy goes back to school. I'll not have to do as much running around and I'll have more time to myself. Boy oh boy, when does school start again....I'm sooo excited! hehe, j/k of course....or, maybe I'm not. lol

Lori

Re: My current WIPS
Lori,
Santa is looking great. I can't wait to see what you have planned for him.
All of the hard work you are putting in on the ornaments is going to pay off, I can feel it. Keep it up.
You are doing a great job.

Maybe I should just start calling you Muse Lori....LOL!!!!! I don't mind getting my inspiration or pusharation from a fellow artist. I am getting use to having a quiet house again...Chaz started back to school Monday...I miss him so but am enjoying my studio time. Aren't I bad?

Re: My current WIPS
Thanks, Darel. Appreciate the encouragement! It's funny how I float back and forth between projects, huh. Keeps it from getting dull. hehe
Jeremy, my boy, starts back on the 24th. He is going to Maine on Friday morning until next Tuesday. Flying to see his real dad. He's never traveled by himself before, but, it will be a good experience for him, especially since he will be 17 next month. It will be quiet around here for the next few days because of that. I think it will give me some time to get some more stuff finished. lol Aside from that, Regi, I don't know if I'm a muse or not lol. I think half the time I'm opporating without mine as it is. lol
Anyway, time for bed before I drop. One more day of work for the week... yahooooo!
