I was so excited about my ooaks being at the HB Museum gift shop but got word today that they aren't selling like they should. I was told that everyone owww's and ahhh's over them and makes comments that they are well worth the price since they are hand sculpted and ooak but they just don't want to spend the money. They are going to have a one time limited sale on them and see how that does and if still no buyers then I'm going to go and get them and bring them home. My heart aches...isn't that silly? Of course, now my confidence levels have just plummetted. Discouraged and sad :( 551263

Regi, don't get discouraged. Times (economy) are just strange around here right now. Compared to the rest of the state of Alabama, Huntsville is the least hardest hit be the recession. The economy here is still pretty good, but people seem to still be afraid to spend on things like art. I have stuff in two differant places here. A coffee shop and a doll store, and I only sold one small thing during Christmas.

If they don't mind the christmas stuff hanging around into spring, I would leave them there and see what happens. At least leave them there untill you can change them out for some new figure, and then put those back next christmas. Things will change.

Just don't get discouraged.

Awww thanks Darel...I appreciate the support. I don't think they have the space to store them until next year. Ginger is very sweet and has always been very up front so if she feels they might need to be somewhere else then I need to listen to her....I think!!! I did sell one of the captured faeries and about six of my ornaments so I thought they were doing fairly well for it being my first shop placement. I had already made three more faeries to take up there but I don't know now. I might wait on my brother in law to see if he is going to do the online gallery site. (posted about it on the "welcome" board) I guess I need to get my hiney out and about and see if there are any places close by where I could put them too...LOL!!! How do you figure your price if you don't mind me asking? That is something I have a very hard time with. I think that my price was in range...it's the 40% that the museum tacks on that raised it above the "affordable" price I think. Again, thank you for the encourgement..it was so needed!!!

Hugs,
Regi

Regi,

Darel said it best....the economy is just very uncertain at the moment. I wouldn't be so hard on yourself. The museum shop is only one outlet out of many options. The fact that you sold some items in a failing economy is something to be very proud of. And, what that tells me is the fact that if the economy was not so poor right now, you would have in fact sold many more items. Timing is everything and right now, perhaps is just not the right time for some things.

Just a thought to consider, I'm not real sure how big your pieces are, but have you thought of working in a smaller scale? Just a wee bit? It seems that people don't mind spending a little money for little items. It's the big expenses that they shy away from. Although, a true collector will not bat an eyelash if it is something they truly like, but the casual collector watches their pennys and considers where they will place their new prized piece.

For example, when I did fine arts paintings....I was very good and in fact took in many ribbons. But, I ended up with a ton of work and no walls to hang them on. People only have so much wall space. Discouraged and sad :( 481660 So, as much as I loved to paint, I gave it up, and went to something more manageable. That was doll making. I have sold more dolls than I have paintings. Why? because you dont' have to hang them on the wall and people can always find a shelve to sit something onto. The smaller the better is what I'm discovering. I would say, under the size of 10" is the key.

Anyway, that is my 2 cents worth, not much, but that is what it is. Discouraged and sad :( 805951 Again, I wouldn't be upset that the venue might not work out....you sold...and that is what counts. When one door closes, there are many more that will open....you will see.

Hugs,
Lori

I LOVE this group...always encouraging and also being honest. Thank you Lori...your two cents worth is ALWAYS welcomed my friend. I am proud that I did sell some things. All of my Santa's are around or under 12 inches....I make them as though I were going to be placing them in my house somewhere. The faeries I just finished are tiny ones 4 inches or smaller....the cages that they are in make them bigger but they are removable from their housing. I am just going to have to get out there and look and see what there is...we live in a very small town....ummm..I think it's considered a town...LOL!!! I want to thank you and Darel for the support...you guys are the bestest as the Chazman would say!!!!

Being the "Newbie" doesn't exclude me from giving an opinion, does it?? Discouraged and sad :( 617210 Well, here goes. Regi....they are all right. I have seen your "stuff" and it is wonderful. Don't get discouraged..just hang in there. They say the economy is slowly recovering so your wonderful things will find homes again.

Lori,
I think that I will take your advice to Regi about making smaller figures and see what happens. It could be fun to make a smaller scale item. Thanks for the help.
God Bless,
Kathy

Regi,

Peggy and I went by HB on Saturday and saw your display. They have it set up really nice, with a lot of good lighting.
Neither Peggy or I thought your prices were too high even with there commision added on.

Anyway everything looked great and we enjoyed looking at all of your neet sculpts.

Awwwww...you and Peggy give each other a hug and then look at each other and say "That's from Regi"!!! I appreciate you both for doing that. I haven't heard when Ginger is going to be listing a sale yet. Hopefully that will help more them. Thank you about my prices...I do feel as though I priced them fairly. Lynda Dunham-Watkins gave me a formula to go by and I try and follow it. I saw a tv ad this weekend for a shop over in Prattville that I thought about going and checking on. I saw in her ad and on their website that she carries items like my ooaks. They are from known artist and I think might be cast from resin so I don't know if she would want ooak from an unknown...LOL!!!! Here is the site..let me know what you think.

Carol Brooks Home and Holiday Shoppe in Historic Prattville, Alabama

I have got to find their lil niche in this world...LOL...if I don't I won't be able to buy anymore supplies and that's just not right!!! Discouraged and sad :( 579648

Regi,

Carol Brooks Home and Holiday Shoppe looks like the perfect place. I would think your sculpts would fit in there nicely. And she has an all year long Christmas area.

Keep trying it will work out.

I agree with Darel, I think your stuff would fit in their nicely. I would not hesitate to give them a holler. Could be, you are the next well-known artist! Discouraged and sad :( 225309 You will never know unless you give them a try. Aside from that, people love to work with someone who is pleasant and down-to-earth much more than some lofty personality with their nose so far up in the air that they can either see down their nostrils or the birds flying by could poop down them!
