Re: is there a Tutorials
Hello there, Mandi!
I did some searching around here as I know Paula was kind enough to find and post a couple of neat links. If you look in the section on "community links" you will see 2 separate post there. One is "HGTV Santa by Diane Troutman" and the other is "strengthening and padding out an armature" you will find the "basic" tutorial there.
There is not right way or wrong way to build a santa face. For me, I just like to have a round plump nose and chubby cheeks. Also, a good rule of thumb is, if he is fat, he will have fat jowls too under the chin. It's just a basic part of anatomy and goes with the territory.
There really are not that many tutorials out there on sculpting a santa. I can tell ya, I looked all over and never found any for myself. The biggest thing will be to go by trial and error and by photo reference. I think I mentioned to you already Jack Johnstons video at www.artdolls.com and also Judith Klawitter has one as well. But those will cost ya. Jack Johnstons I believe is on sale at the moment. I had to break down and get the videos. I bought Judith's video a couple months ago, and my hubby bought me Jack Johnstons santa one for a christmas present a couple of years ago. That is how I started out in polymer clay. My first polymer doll was a santa doll.
Sorry, I'm not much more help. You might have some luck searching on youtube.com for more stuff, but I couldn't come up with anything else. Could be the way I was doing my search though.
Good luck to ya,
Lori

Re: is there a Tutorials
I agree with you 100% Lori. I searched high and low for instructions on how to start a Santa. Jack was the closest I could find, although I never bought his Santa DVD. I learned by trial and error, lots of error. Study anatomy first off. Get a feel for it and it will come naturally. The head is you own matter of preferance. Something I did which helped alot was to make a head mold from your clay. After you bake it let it cool, then use it as a push mold and stuff some clay in and pull it out. You can see the definition. Don't bake it yet. Add a little more clay here and there, say more on the cheeks or chin, a little more around the eyes, change the shape of the head make the nose longer or shorter, even fatter. Use tubes of clay , balls of clay, half balls of clay, and remember to smooth smooth smooth.
Just play with your clay and have fun. If you don't like it, just squish it and start over.
